Rio de Janeiro - Rochina Favela
After almost a week of deliberation, Bonnie and I decided we didn't want to leave Rio de Janeiro without visiting one of the city's hundreds of favelas--sprawling slums that altogether house 1/3 of the city's population. We opted to spend the day walking through one of the largest and well-known favelas with a guide who grew up in Rochina and continues to live there. He gave us a fascinating and informative view of life in the favelas, which ended up being an unforgettable experience which was surprisingly safe and enjoyable.
